Lieutenant-Colonel Oliver
Charles Beauchamp St John,
CMG, died on April 4 at the
age of 68. He was educated at
Charterhouse and Sandhurst
and served with the XXth
Lancers, Indian Army from
1928 to 1932. His subsequent
career was in the Indian
Political Service where he was
Prime Minister of Alwar
State in 1936, Secretay to the Governor, North West
Frontier Province, from 1942 to 1946 and
Deputy Commissioner, Hazara
in 1947-8.
He joined the Foreign Office in 1948 and remained there until his retirement in 1968. He was made a CMG in 1963.
He was twice married, first to Elizabeth Mary Lambton who died in 1957 and, second, in 1966, to Mrs Mary Maxwell-Gumbleton. He had a son and three daughters by his first marriage.
