| John Gumbleton (or Gombleton) was a son of John Gumbleton, innkeeper of Salisbury, Wiltshire, and his wife Mary, nee Lyme. He was baptised on 10 Jun 1646 at Salisbury, St Martin. In 1671, he was a beneficiary of the will of his father, John, who left him £40 and “one silver beaker marked with the character of the sun”. The money was to be paid when he reached the age of 25.
He must have married a wife Susanna, but the marriage records have not been found. They had three children between 1674 and 1677. Susanna Gumbleton was buried in Salisbury, St Thomas, in 1681. In 1702, he was married, by licence, to his second wife, Elizabeth Garrett (a widow), at St Peter, Cornhill, London. No children have been found for that marriage. John Gumbleton died in 1703 and was buried at St Saviour’s, South London. The burial describes him as “Captain John Gumbleton”, suggesting that he was probably a sea captain. His will, proved the same year, leaves money to his wife, children and step-children. The terms of the will led to an advertisement being placed in the London Gazette, to ascertain the whereabouts of John’s son, Obadiah, who had travelled overseas, some five years earlier. | ||||||||||||||
